38 Star Flag

A new flag was purchased for the front of the Museum in 2021. Our replica of the 38-star flag was the official symbol of the country when the Grundy family moved into their house in 1885.

This version of the U.S. flag flew between 1877 (admission of Colorado) and 1890 (admission of North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, Washington, and Idaho). The 38 star flag was adopted July 4, 1877 after the admission of Colorado to the Union. This was the 20th flag of the United States.

There are 13 stripes - 7 red and 6 white that represent the original 13 colonies. There are 38 white 5-pointed stars on a field of blue in the upper left corner with a single point of the stars pointing upwards.

Presidents that served under this flag:

  • Rutherford B. Hayes (1877 - 1881)
  • James A. Garfield (1881)
  • Chester A. Arthur (1881 - 1885)
  • Grover Cleveland (1885 - 1889)
  • Benjamin Harrison (1889 - 1893)
